Steiff’s history reads like a fairytale! Margarete Steiff contracted polio at 18 months old, which left her in a wheelchair for life. She refused however to let her life be defined by her disability, and went on to learn sewing and tailoring, becoming exceptionally skilled. Margarete laid the foundations for the first Steiff bears, designed in 1902 by her nephew Richard Steiff, who is credited with creating the world’s first, jointed, Steiff teddy bear.
