Uncle Sam is best known for being the face of United States military recruiting campaigns but the origins of the name actually predate this. In 1812, a meat packer from New York called Samuel Wilson supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the war. Wilson stamped the barrels with "U.S" for United States, but the soldiers began referring to the meat as "Uncle Sam's". To celebrate this iconic figure, Uncle Sam is made from curly brass mohair and wears a handmade felt hat. His "Uncle Sam" pin and silk bow tie have been gently antiqued with airbrushing and he plays the tune "America, The Beautiful".
Uncle Sam is an exclusive to North America of only 1500 pieces and he comes with a numbered certificate in a Steiff gift box.
